If you Google Trendy or Trending Foods now you might be taken aback by the items listed and images shown. What makes a certain food or foods popular for a moment? Are companies pushing brands that have previously been on the market, but now they have changed wording or labels to be more hipster-like? Did they come up with something new altogether that people now want to be a part of? It’s puzzling.
Grocery stores have sections of “organic” and “health” foods that are considered good for certain diets, or watchful ingredients like non-gmo. The section isn’t very large in comparison to the grocery store size. Most other foods sold are typical bread varieties, and milk, fruits, veggies, meat, etc…you get the idea. Those types of foods are familiar and not too thought provoking as the “section” previously mentioned. We buy it for repetition or by what looks nice. Sure, we read labels there as well, but surely not in depth as what is really inside the package of the organic pea soup for example.
Do age groups decide what goes on the shelves? Grandmas or even great-grandmas might still bake from scratch and use old family recipes that call for lard, real butter, and other ingredients that might not be so welcome to the weight-watcher or heart-healthy crowd. But, someone is buying up those items, because they haven’t gone away yet!
Do people try all sections of the entire grocery store? Sure they do! There are comfort foods, family dinner foods, snack foods, side dishes, and beverages of all kinds plus ready-made meals that only involved pushing microwave buttons to heat. Foods may not necessarily have changed, but demand has changed. Allergies of different sorts have been brought to the attention of those suffering from gluten reactions. Labels have changed on packaging stating that their product is gluten-free. Maybe it never had gluten, but why not jump on the trending bandwagon by adding a label that will assure consumers that their product is safe to eat. That is a trendy thing too. It’s interesting what may be trending next.
